How to Clean Your Ducted A/C Filter in 6 Simple Steps
Tired of stale air? Follow our friendly DIY guide to clean your ducted A/C filter and enjoy a fresher, more comfortable home environment.
There’s no denying that life is busy. Between work, looking after your family, and looking after yourself, your ducted air conditioning filter is probably the last thing on your mind!
But here’s the thing: a clean filter means fresher air, better cooling, and even saving money on power bills.
The good news is that filter cleaning is quick and painless! Keep reading to learn how to clean a ducted air conditioner filter in six simple steps.
If your system is running, switch it off. This will make removing the filter a lot easier and prevent dust from being sucked up into the evaporator coil, which can block the coil and affect your system’s operation.
Locate the return air grille. It’ll be a rectangular or square panel with a grid-like design found on the ceiling in a hallway or somewhere central in your house. Think of it as the air conditioner’s gateway for breathing in air before cooling and redistributing it.
To open the grille, look for small latches or clips on the sides. Press or pull these latches to release the grille. If your model has a pin, unscrew this with your hand until the panel swings down. Once the grille is open, carefully slide out the filter. The filter will likely be dusty, so shield your eyes!
Most A/C filters are made of a durable mesh or synthetic material that’s washable.
Take the filter outside and rinse it with a hose to remove dust. Spray at a slight angle to avoid damaging the filter’s fibres. Let the water run through the filter until it's clear. You can spray a mild cleaning solution on stubborn dirt buildup first and then rinse.
Don’t vacuum or brush the filter, as vacuuming and brushing can cause damage.
Important note: While it’s rare, some ducted A/Cs have replaceable cardboard filters that cannot be cleaned; they must be replaced.
Shake off any excess water and leave the filter to dry in the shade.
The filter must be completely dry before you place it back in the return air grille. A wet filter can grow mould.
While the return air grille is open, wipe down the inside and outside of it with a damp cloth to remove dust. Use a vacuum with a brush attachment for a thorough clean.
Double-check that the filter is completely dry, then reinsert it securely into the return air grille. If there are airflow direction arrows on the filter, make sure they point the same way as before to maintain proper airflow.
Close and latch or screw the grille back into place properly to prevent air leaks.
