Choosing the Correct Location

Before we get our hands dirty, let's figure out where your new cool A/C will live. Window air conditioners, also known as box air conditioners, can be installed in a window or through a wall.

Your unit's manual will tell you what's best for your model.

  • Window installation: Great if you've got a sturdy window that opens and can handle the weight.

  • Wall installation: Ideal if you're short on suitable windows or prefer a more permanent setup.

Window Installation Guide

While window installations are rare in Australia, they're still an option if you prefer not to make any changes to your walls.

Keep in mind that most window air conditioners don't come with a mounting kit or accordion side panels, so you'll need to source these online.

Here's how you can get started.

  1. Get your materials: You'll need mounting brackets, accordion side panels, screws, a drill, a level, and weatherproofing materials like foam tape or weather stripping.

  2. Prepare the window: Choose a window that's easy to access. Clean the window sill and remove any obstructions.

  3. Install mounting brackets: Once you purchase the mounting kit and accordion panels, you'll need to secure the mounting brackets firmly to either the top or side (depending on the type you purchased) of the window box air conditioner. Make sure to follow the instructions that will come with the kit. These brackets will support the A/C and stop it from falling out of the window, so it's important that you install them correctly. Once complete, you can attach the accordion panels to the unit.

  4. Position the air conditioner: Carefully lift the unit (it's a good idea to have a friend help) and place it on the window sill. Make sure it's centred and slightly tilted outward to allow for proper drainage outside.

  5. Adjust the accordion panels: Extend the panels from the sides or top of the unit to the window frame. This helps seal the space and keeps the cool air in.

  6. Secure everything in place: Again, by following the instructions that come with the mounting kit, use the screws to fasten the panels and brackets securely. Check that the window closes tightly against the unit.

  7. Seal any gaps: Use weatherproofing strips or caulk to seal around the unit, stopping any drafts and moisture from entering the room.

  8. Test the installation: Plug in the air conditioner and turn it on to make sure everything is working smoothly!

Wall Installation Guide

In Australia, wall installations are the common method for setting up window air conditioners. While it might sound complicated, installing your window box air conditioner through a wall isn't as tricky as you think.

  • Select the location:

    • Choose a spot between wall studs without any wiring or pipes. If you're not sure, you may need to get a tradesman to come and check for you.

    • Make sure there's enough space for you outside to work safely.

    • Consider the proximity to an indoor power outlet to plug the unit into.

  • Measure and mark:

    • Refer to your unit's manual for dimensions.

    • Mark the interior wall slightly larger (about 5mm on all sides) than the unit. Make sure the marks are plumb and level.

  • Cut the opening:

    • Wear protective gear like gloves and safety glasses.

    • Carefully cut along your markings on the interior wall.

    • Repeat the process on the exterior wall, ensuring both openings align.

  • Frame the opening:

    • Build a wooden frame inside the cutout for support.

    • Focus on making the bottom frame sturdy, as it will take the unit's weight.

  • Install the unit mounting sleeve:

    • Insert the wall sleeve from the outside into the opening.

    • Ensure the sleeve slopes slightly downward toward the exterior for drainage.

    • Secure the sleeve to the framing with screws. Again, follow the instructions regarding how much overhang to leave inside.

  • Install the air conditioner unit:

    • Slide the air conditioner into the wall sleeve from the inside.

    • Make sure it fits snugly and is properly aligned.

    • Secure the unit to the sleeve as per the manufacturer's instructions.

  • Finish the interior and exterior Surfaces:

    • Interior:

      • Install trim or moulding around the unit for a clean look.

      • Seal any gaps with caulk to improve energy efficiency.

      • Paint the trim to match your room.

    • Exterior:

      • Apply weatherproof silicone around the unit to prevent water from coming in.

      • Add exterior trim or flashing to protect against the elements.

  • Plug in and test:

    • Connect the unit to the power outlet.

    • Turn on the air conditioner and make sure it's operating correctly.

Things To Keep in Mind Before the Installation Process

Before you get started, there are a few things you'll want to keep in mind.

First, depending on the brand, some window box air conditioners need to be installed by a licensed refrigeration mechanic.

It's a good idea to double-check this when buying the unit so you don't void your warranty.

If you're unsure whether there are electrical wires or plumbing behind your walls where you plan to install the unit, always check with a licensed tradesperson before making any cuts.

And let's not forget about electricity. If there's no power point close by to where the unit will be installed, it's important to hire a licensed electrician to install one for you.

This makes sure your air conditioner runs safely and complies with Australian electrical standards.
